Owensboro Fire Department crews were fighting a fire at the former Bobby Wilson’s Home Furniture on 9th Street Monday afternoon. The building is currently owned by Friends of Sinners and Executive Director Joe Welsh said it was accidental.
Welsh said people have been going into the building, located at 601 E 9th St, without being authorized from FOS while they clean the building out. He noted there were some pipes that were visible that could be a danger if they weren’t handled properly.
“I told my guys to go and cut those pipes that are hanging so it’s not dangerous, then when we tried to cut one out when the spark just hit a piece of insulation,” Welsh said.
He recalled the fire started in the basement.
OFD Fire Chief James Howard said that there are no injuries or fatalities. He noted OFD is still investigating the fire’s cause.
Several stations responded to the fire and extinguished the fire quickly, Howard said.
