Drivers who filled up their tanks at the Shell station on the corner of Tamarack and Carter roads this morning didn’t make it far after pulling away. Some people have also reported having issues on Wednesday. Here’s what happened, and how to get reimbursed if you were affected.

According to a technician on site, a part on top of the Shell station’s underground tank broke and allowed water to seep in, where it mixed with the ethanol. The fuel itself was not bad; the issue was strictly based on the water that leaked in due to the broken part.

The part has been identified, but it will be several days before the station can start selling gas again. Proper steps under state guidelines must be taken, including removing the affected gas, flushing the lines, and going through an inspection once the part is repaired.

It’s unclear exactly when the issue started. The technician said some people reported issues Wednesday night.

Whether affected Wednesday or Thursday, the station owner/manager Sam Gollen said drivers who were affected can get reimbursed for any repairs. They’ll just need to bring their gas receipt (or a bank statement showing the purchase) along with the repair bill to the Shell station.

“We’re sorry,” Gollen said. “None of this happened on purpose. A lot of people think it happened on purpose. (I hope they) clear that out of their mind. As long as they have proof (of the gas purchase) and their bill from the mechanic, we will reimburse them.”
