Owensboro Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is offering free sports physicals for middle and high school athletes during May and June. The group will accept walk-ins and appointments.
“Sports physicals are essential for student-athletes because they help ensure they are healthy enough to participate in their chosen sport. During a sports physical, a doctor will evaluate the athlete’s overall health, including their heart, lungs, and musculoskeletal system. The doctor will also look for any medical conditions that could put the athlete at risk for injury,” a release from OH says.
Sports physicals can help to identify any underlying health conditions that could increase the risk of injury. For example, a doctor may find that an athlete has a heart condition that could put them at risk for sudden cardiac injury.
Sports physicals can also help identify musculoskeletal problems that could lead to pain or injury. For example, a doctor may find that an athlete has a knee injury that could be aggravated by playing sports.
To see an OH specialist, visit between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Owensboro Health Medical Office Building, 1301 Pleasant Valley Road, Suite 500B, or call 270-417-7940 to make an appointment.
The department will also host free sports physicals at several schools around the region, allowing student-athletes to walk in for their exam in May and June. Check the OH social media channels for more information as exact dates become available.
