All nine City Commission candidates and five Mayoral candidates discussed their views on the top issues facing the community during the 2024 Owensboro Times Primary Election Town Hall on Thursday. You can watch the entire event here.
The event was held at the Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum.
Candidates were given the general topics ahead of time, but specific questions were asked for the first time during the event. The community’s input was factored heavily into the formation of questions to make sure we addressed the most important topics to you.

Questions asked of the City Commission candidates were:
- What specific experience or qualifications do you possess that make you the best candidate for the role of city commissioner?
- What do you consider the biggest challenges facing Owensboro, and what would you do to address the issues?
- Looking ahead, what is your vision for our city in the next 5-10 years, and how do you intend to work towards realizing that vision?
- How do you plan to balance the priorities of different stakeholders in our community, particularly when they may have conflicting priorities?

- What inspired you to run for mayor, and what unique qualities or experiences do you bring to this position?
- As mayor, how do you plan to address the most pressing issues facing our city?
- How do you perceive Owensboro’s current identity or brand, and what specific strategies do you propose to further develop and enhance it?
- Communities near Owensboro have been a part of new or major economic development over the last few years. What innovative ideas do you have for promoting economic growth and creating new job opportunities within our community?
- Community round — Each candidate drew a different number out of a mug that corresponded to a question submitted by the community.
- Fairness ordinances, library books, and entertainment options are a few topics that have been the center of local division among residents in recent years. How do you plan to represent and serve the interests of all residents fairly?
- Public safety is a top priority for many residents. How do you plan to work with law enforcement agencies and community organizations to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens?
- Building trust between government officials and the community is vital for effective governance. How do you plan to foster trust, transparency, and open communication between the city manager, city commissioners, and residents?
