Several local schools are calling for an early dismissal due to severe weather predicted for Wednesday afternoon. The complete statements of the school districts are below. Some colleges have also announced closures.
Daviess County Public Schools
“Today, Wednesday, May 8, 2024, DCPS will dismiss school early at 12:15 pm for elementary schools and 1:15pm for middle and high. Our purpose is to ensure the safety of our students and staff due to the forecasted weather approaching the Daviess County/Owensboro region this afternoon. All after-school activities will be canceled, including After-School programs and afternoon preschool. Parents of children enrolled in After-School Programs will be contacted and asked to pick up their child; staff will remain with children until a parent/guardian arrives.“
Grace Christian Academy
“Today, Wednesday, May 8, 2024 GCA will dismiss school early at 12:00 pm elementary and high school students. Pre-K will dismiss at normal time. Our purpose is to ensure the safety of our students and staff due to the forecasted weather approaching the Daviess County/Owensboro region this afternoon. All after-school activities will be canceled, including after-school programs and afternoon preschool. Staff will remain at GCA until all students have been picked up.

Dear HCS Family,
Due to the severe weather threat this afternoon, HCS will be closing early. This decision is in line with that of DCPS, whom we often follow regarding school closing situations.
Pre-school and Kindergarten will have NORMAL pick up.
Elementary and Middle School will be dismissed at 12:00pm.
All afternoon events and childcare will be cancelled.

“Owensboro Catholic Schools will be dismissing 2 hours early due to the inclement weather. Elementary campus bus riders will be picked up at noon. Middle School and High School bus riders will be picked up at 1pm.
Central Office will also be closed.

“The National Weather Service has issued alerts for several rounds of potentially severe weather this afternoon and through overnight. Based on these alerts and information from our university meteorologist, all Western Kentucky University campuses will close at noon CDT today. Some essential personnel will be required to maintain infrastructure and operations. The essential staff will be notified by their departments based on specific needs.“
