Owensboro Health has launched a Juvenile Diabetes Support Group at the Healthpark, a monthly gathering dedicated to providing support, education, and community for children with Type 1 diabetes and their caregivers.

“The Juvenile Diabetes Support Group was established in response to a direct request from local families,” OH officials said in a release. “In May, a school guidance counselor highlighted the need for a support network for families dealing with juvenile diabetes. Owensboro Health’s diabetes educators and dietitians — Melissa Gaither, Jenny Young, and Shelby Shelby — eagerly responded to this call, organizing the first meeting and providing invaluable support to participating families.”

Gaither said managing Type 1 diabetes is a relentless task, especially for young children and their families.

“This group provides a crucial sense of belonging, helping both kids and caregivers realize they are not alone,” she said. “We want to create a community where families feel heard and supported, and where they can find the resources they need right here in Owensboro.”

Upcoming meeting dates for the support group are July 16, August 20, and September 17. Meetings are held at 5 p.m. in Healthpark Classroom B.

“Each session offers a blend of social interaction and education, allowing kids to connect with peers who understand their challenges and caregivers to share tips and receive vital information,” Gaither said.

At the July 16 meeting, a mental health counselor will address concerns and questions raised by the children. On August 20, a speaker from the school system will discuss 504 plans, which address the safety and support of children with medical needs in school.

Families interested in joining the support group can register by contacting Young at 270-688-4858. The sessions are free and open to everyone.

“At Owensboro Health, we are committed to listening to our community and responding with initiatives that truly make a difference,” Gaither said. “We are here to support you every step of the way.
