A new state law that went into effect today slightly raises the price of vehicle inspection fees that must be collected by the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

DCSO will now collect $15 for each vehicle inspected at the Daviess County Courthouse, located at 212 St. Ann Street. For an inspection at a dealership or location other than the Courthouse, residents will pay a $20 one-time travel fee plus the $15 inspection fee per vehicle. The fee was previously $5 at the Courthouse and $15 for off-site inspections.

“Inspections are important because this is how we screen what vehicles we allow on our roadways,” said Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman. “We ensure they meet our safety requirements which broadly affects our insurance rates, and more importantly, keeps people safe. It also deters stolen vehicles from coming into our system and being re-sold.”

Youngman said Sheriff’s Offices in Kentucky are in part funded by fees collected from various sources to fund the constitutionally mandated duties they perform.

“The law enforcement role we play in the county is funded by the Fiscal Court,” he said. “Occasionally these fees are raised by the General Assembly, and that is reflective of what sheriffs’ budgets require to fund their non-law enforcement operations and whether or not it is fair to ask all taxpayers to fund activities that they aren’t using themselves.”

For instance, Youngman said DCSO charges fees on tax collection, Carrying Concealed Deadly Weapons (CCDW) permits, civil process, and other things such as vehicle inspections.
