The Apollo Eagles pulled off a thrilling 40-36 comeback victory over McCracken County on the road Friday night, highlighted by a standout performance from senior Niles Board.

The Mustangs struck first with an 80-yard drive, but Apollo responded quickly with a 20-yard touchdown run by sophomore John Milburn to tie the game at 7-7. McCracken County regained the lead with a 40-yard touchdown pass followed by an interception that led to another score, putting them ahead 21-7 by the end of the first quarter.

Apollo’s Board made a game-changing play with a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, trimming the deficit to 21-14. The Eagles continued to fight back as sophomore Max Johnson scored on a 7-yard run, though the extra point attempt was missed, leaving Apollo trailing 21-20.

In the second quarter, Board scored again, this time on a 3-yard run, and he later returned a punt 70 yards for another touchdown, giving Apollo a 33-21 lead. McCracken answered with a 30-yard touchdown run, but the Eagles maintained a 33-29 advantage.

As the game progressed, McCracken took the lead 36-33 following an Apollo fumble. However, with just one minute remaining, Johnson connected with Board on a screen pass for a touchdown, putting Apollo ahead 40-36.

An interception by junior Ehmadjai Badger sealed the victory for the Eagles.

Apollo head coach John Edge praised Board’s performance.

“Niles had over 400 all-purpose yards. He was a huge difference maker for us,” Edge said. “We were able to keep them off balance, and despite some turnovers and fatigue, we got the ball to Niles and were able to win.”

The Eagles will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face the Meade County Green Wave at home next Friday.

“Anytime you can come down here and win, it’s big-time. I’m proud of our guys for their effort and determination,” Edge said. “We know we need to improve our rotations and manage fatigue better, but overall, this is a fantastic win for us.”
