Three men were smoking marijuana and “playing with handguns in an unsafe manner” when a handgun fired and struck one of them in the head Wednesday night, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office. A 21-year-old Owensboro man has been charged with reckless homicide for the incident.
According to a release, Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 10:07 p.m. Wednesday reporting that a person had been shot at an apartment in the 4300 block of Gateway Drive in east Daviess County.
DCSO patrol deputies, Daviess County Fire Department, Thruston Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance were dispatched.
“Upon arrival, deputies located an unconscious male subject in the living room of the apartment with a gunshot wound. Deputies and medical personnel began life-saving measures and the victim was transported to the Emergency Department of Owensboro Health Regional Hospital via AMR Ambulance where he was pronounced deceased,” according to the release.
DCSO General Investigation detectives and the Daviess County Coroner’s Office responded to continue the investigation. Multiple firearms were located in the room where the shooting occurred, including a handgun that was reported stolen out of Owensboro, according to DCSO.
“Two subjects that were present during the shooting were taken to DCSO where they were interviewed by detectives. Detectives determined that the victim and two of his friends were smoking marijuana and playing with handguns in an unsafe manner and that a handgun fired striking the victim in the head,” according to DCSO.
Both subjects were charged and taken to the Daviess County Detention Center.
Cayden Maxwell Moorman, 21, was charged with reckless homicide. Dalton Kyle Pollard, 20, was charged with receiving stolen property (firearm).
