Law enforcement officials say the driver involved in a single-vehicle accident near Knottsville on Thursday was suspected to be under the influence of controlled substances. Further investigation led to the man being arrested on drug trafficking and other charges, including outstanding warrants.

According to a release, at approximately 7:40 p.m. on September 5, Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch received a report of a single-vehicle accident with possible injuries at the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and Boteler Road.

The release says that Daviess County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies arrived to the scene and observed a male subject — identified as Stanley Glenn Canary, 64, of Utica — outside of the vehicle “asking people for a ride away from the scene.”

“Canary advised the deputies he was traveling on Boteler Road towards Pleasant Valley Road and thought he was coming up to a curve in the roadway instead of a T-intersection with a stop sign,” the release says. “Canary advised he went straight through the stop sign, across the ditch, and striking the pond dam. While speaking with Canary, deputies determined he may be under the influence of controlled substances and performed field sobriety tests.”

Canary was then taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, officials said.

“In the floorboard of Canary’s 2001 Dodge Ram pickup in plain view was evidence of trafficking in methamphetamine along with drug paraphernalia,” the release says. “There were also two active arrest warrants out for Canary.”

Canary was transported via DCSO to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital to be assessed for injuries prior to being lodged at the Daviess County Detention Center.

DCSO said Canary was charged with the following:

  • Operating Motor Vehicle u/Influence of Substances, 1st Offense
  • Trafficking Controlled Subs – 1st Degree, 2nd or > Offense (Meth)
  • Drug Paraphernalia – Possess/Buy
  • Operating Vehicle with Expired Operator’s License
  • Failure of Owner to Maintain Required Insurance
  • No Registration Receipt
  • No Registration Plates
  • Failure to Notify Address Change
  • Failure to Register Transfer of Motor Vehicle
  • Daviess County Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear
