A driver going the wrong way caused a three-vehicle accident where one driver was ejected and another had to be extricated Sunday night on U.S. 60 East, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

According to DCSO, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch received multiple calls about an accident with injuries in the 6800 block of U.S. 60 East near Maceo.

Upon arrival, DCSO deputies discovered three vehicles were involved and that two people were injured.

“Just minutes prior to the report of the crash, Central Dispatch had received a call regarding a wrong-way driver in that area, and that information was given to all patrol deputies via radio and mobile data terminal messaging,” according to a release.

Initial investigation based on physical evidence and witness reports indicate that a Dodge SUV was being operated westbound in the eastbound lanes when it sideswiped an eastbound passenger car causing minor damage and then struck an eastbound Lincoln SUV head-on on causing severe damage to both vehicles, according to DCSO.

The driver of the Lincoln SUV was ejected from the vehicle but only sustained moderate injuries, while he driver of the Dodge SUV had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and sustained severe injuries, the release says. Both injured parties were transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital Emergency Department by ambulance.

According to DCSO, based on vehicle description and circumstances, it is believed that the Dodge SUV was the same vehicle that had been reported to Central Dispatch driving on the wrong side of the highway. Deputies are still investigating whether alcohol or controlled substances were involved in the events that led to the crash. The roadway was closed for two hours.

In addition to DCSO and Central Dispatch, the Daviess County Fire Department, Yelvington Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance responded to the crash.
