The City of Owensboro is updating its alcohol regulations, adopting a new limited golf course license established by the state and expanding sales hours on St. Patrick’s Days that fall on Sundays.
The ordinance introduces a limited golf course license, which according to state statute permits qualifying golf courses to sell alcoholic beverages by the drink.
The City has elected to enable Hillcrest Golf Course to join the five other courses in Owensboro and Daviess County that already offer alcohol sales. The course plans to sell beer and potentially seltzers, following a model already in place at Ben Hawes Golf Course, also owned by the city.
“There’s already alcohol consumption happening on the courses,” said City Golf Course Manager Charles Whelan. “This gives us the ability to monitor and control it more effectively. We’ve been selling beer at Ben Hawes for years without issues, so it makes sense to extend this to Hillcrest.”
The ordinance would also allow alcohol sales to begin at 6 a.m. and continue until 2 a.m. the next day on St. Patrick’s Day when the holiday falls on a Sunday. This adjustment aligns with existing rules for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when they occur on Sundays.
