Kentucky has launched a two-year initiative to create career opportunities for the state’s youth. The Green River Area Development District, in collaboration with Kentucky’s 10 workforce boards, is leading the $20 million effort to place young adults, ages 16 to 24, in sustainable employment.
The statewide program, Putting Young Kentuckians to Work, was included in House Bill 1 during the 2024 Kentucky legislative session. It aims to bridge the gap between education and the workforce by equipping young Kentuckians with the skills, support, and opportunities needed to build lasting careers and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
The Green River Workforce Board, part of GRADD, is focusing on addressing employers’ workforce needs while improving income opportunities for young people in the region. The program is expected to serve 230 youth across seven counties.
“We are searching for host sites willing to accept young people,” said Alisha Smith, workforce development youth coordinator at GRADD. “The grant pays their salaries; we just need companies prepared to extend them opportunities.”
Smith and her team are actively recruiting participants and partnering with local businesses to provide worksite opportunities.
