Update, 3:43 p.m. — A 26-year-old man has been charged with first-degree assault for the incident.

According to the Owensboro Police Department, Preston Smith was taken into custody just after 11 a.m. Officials said Smith was located in a nearby room at the Cadillac Motel and was lodged at the Daviess County Detention Center following his arrest.

Original story — A man was life-flighted to a hospital in Louisville overnight after suffering from a “severe laceration” near the Cadillac Motel, according to the Owensboro Police Department.

According to OPD, patrol officers responded shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday to a report of a bleeding male at the bus stop near the Cadillac Motel. Upon arrival, officers found the victim near the intersection of West 2nd Street and Frayser Avenue, suffering from a severe laceration to his left hand/wrist, the release says.

Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures, including applying a tourniquet, and provided care until the Owensboro Fire Department (OFD) and American Medical Response (AMR) arrived on the scene, according to OPD.

Officials said the victim was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital (OHRH) and then life-flighted to Louisville for further medical treatment, and his current condition remains unknown.

Evidence from the investigation led patrol officers to several rooms at the Cadillac Motel and multiple individuals as possible witnesses, according to the release. Criminal Investigations Division (CID) detectives were called upon to further the investigation.

Officials said a suspect in the assault has been developed, and it “appears this is an isolated incident.” The investigation is ongoing.
