Owensboro Catholic’s football season ended just one win shy of the ultimate goal, as the Aces fell 50-34 to Beechwood in the Class 2A state championship Friday at Kroger Field.
Despite the disappointment, Aces head coach Jason Morris said they take pride in another historic year, finishing 14-1 with a second consecutive undefeated regular season and state runner-up finish. Morris praised the dedication and legacy of his senior class, which helped elevate the program to new heights.
“These seniors have given me everything they’ve had over the last four years,” Morris said. “The past three years, we’ve won more games than any other span in Owensboro Catholic football history. It’s tough to lose them, and they’re going to be sorely missed.”
Beechwood, powered by a dominant ground game that produced six rushing touchdowns, controlled the contest early, but the Aces continued to fight back. Senior quarterback Brady Atwell led the effort with 366 passing yards and four total touchdowns — two through the air and two on the ground.
“We faced so much adversity this season,” Morris said. “Going undefeated in the regular season two years in a row puts a target on your back. The pressure on these 17- and 18-year-old kids is immense, but they handled it with toughness and heart.”
Senior running back Dereon Crowe added a rushing and receiving touchdown, while Waryn Ebelhar caught a 20-yard touchdown pass to keep the Aces within striking distance. Defensively, Vince Carrico anchored the effort with 14 tackles.
Though the loss was tough, Morris emphasized that the program is in a strong position to keep competing at a high level.
“We’ve got record numbers in our youth league, middle school, and high school programs, and that’s a testament to this senior class,” Morris said. “We’re not going anywhere. I’m so proud of what these guys have done, and I know the future is bright.”
Beechwood’s Chase Flaherty led his team with four rushing touchdowns, including one late in the fourth quarter, sealing the win for the Tigers.
As the Aces look ahead, Morris said the foundation built by this senior class will serve as a springboard for the program’s continued success.
