In a pair of City County matchups, Owensboro Catholic took down Apollo, while Daviess County beat Owensboro. In other action Hancock County won at home, while Trinity (Whitesville) lost on the road.

Owensboro Catholic 63, Apollo 44

Luke Beickman scored 13 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to power Owensboro Catholic to a 63-44 win over Apollo. Solly Smith was second on the team in scoring with 16 points, while Dremail Carothers added 11 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds.

“It was a solid road win for our first district win,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Tim Riley said. “I think our pressure wore them down, but it wasn’t easy. Four of our guys scored in double figures to give us balance.”

The Eagles Luke Jarboe and Tate Powers combined for 21 points, while Sam Butterworth was third on the team in scoring with nine points.

“It was a good reality check for us as we still have some growing up to do,” Apollo head coach Ryne Tinsley said. “We were 2-0 in the district, and we were “hunted” for the first time since I have been here instead of being the “hunter”. We did not handle it well. It was 100% what we needed.”

Daviess County 60, Owensboro 40

In a rematch from early on in the season, the Panthers moved to 2-0 against Owensboro with a 60-40 win. DeAaron Watkins recorded a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Jonathan Moss added 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Jaxon Brown finished with 14 points, four assist, and three rebounds.

“We were aggressively offensively for most of the game,” Daviess County head coach Neil Hayden said. In the second half we were much better defensively and on the glass.”

For the Red Devils, Will Hume led the way with 18 points, while Keaton Hughes was second on the team in scoring with 12 points.

Hancock County 53, Portland Christian 45

Keegan Wilson exploded for 26 points, four rebounds, and one assist to help fuel the Hornets to a 53-45 win over Portland Christian. Alex Madden grabbed 16 boards, while Dylan Morris dished out five assists.

“I thought our boys used perseverance with an aggressive defense that dictated the game,” Hancock County head coach Josh Roberts said. “Keegan Wilson had a fantastic game for us and the energy from our bench was key. Our rebounding was great with physicality playing a massive role.”

Grayson County 95 , Trinity (Whitesville) 41

Trinity could not get their shots to fall, losing 95-41 on the road to Grayson County. Ian Roby scored a team-high 11 points, while Grant Howard, Connor Hatfield, and Will Hernandez all scored five points.

“We have to get back to playing unselfish and disciplined basketball,” Trinity head coach Nathan West said. “We are not trying to be selfish, but there are times when teams go on runs when we want to help, so we try to do it ourselves. On the defensive end, we have to figure a lot of things out. We have to be in position for more wall-ups and charges, and fewer shot blocks.”
