Former President Joe Biden has granted a full and unconditional pardon to Sara Jones Biden, a native of Owensboro, alongside several Biden family members, according to an official statement released by the White House on Friday.
The pardon, issued under the president’s constitutional authority, covers any nonviolent offenses committed by the recipients between January 1, 2014, and the date of issuance.
In the statement, President Biden said his family “has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me — the worst kind of partisan politics. Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end.”
The White House further clarified that the decision reflects the president’s belief in safeguarding individuals from partisan attacks.
“This issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” the statement reads.
Sara Jones Biden is the wife of James Biden, who is Joe Biden’s brother. Sara and James, Valerie Biden Owens (Joe’s sister) and her husband John T. Owens, and Francis W. Biden (Joe’s brother, were among the individuals included in the clemency order.
