Competing at the 1st region wrestling tournament Apollo finished seventh, Daviess County ninth, Owensboro 11th, and Owensboro Catholic 12th.
The Eagles Kevin Lopez finished fourth in his weight class and advanced to the state tournament. Jaiden Carver, Patrick Glenn, and Tavius Walker placed fifth in their weight classes and were named alternates to the state tournament. Clayton Pendley, Brayden Mattingly, Anthony Hester, and Jaxton Howard finished sixth.
“We wrestled well and we had several young kids place,” Apollo head coach Courtney Johns said. “We have the toughest region in the state.”
The Panthers had three athletes advance to the state tournament in freshmen Jah Patterson (113), and sophomores Jackson Stoner (3rd, 126), and Kaden Nichols (third, 150).
For Owensboro, Juan David Quintana and Kameryis Rodriquez Cline finished third at 132 and 144 respectively. Both advanced to the state tournament. Head coach Griffen Kelley was also pleased with the showings from Daniel Fickas, Isrell Roberts, Ryan Schaefer, and Tristan Kirkman.
“Overall, the guys worked hard today,” Kelley said. “It was a great way to get the younger guys some experience in a high-powered tournament setting and they laid it all on the mat. We’re excited to have Juan and Kam compete in Lexington next week.”
The Aces Thomas Brauer finished fifth and was named an alternate to the state tournament.
“Overall, we had a solid year,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Matt Allen said. “Postseason didn’t go as well as we had hoped, but we are going to learn from it and come back stronger next year. We have a very young team and are returning all of our wrestlers. We plan to keep working hard in the offseason and continue growing as a program.”
