The Owensboro Museum of Science and History will host a symposium, “Civil War Guerrillas in Kentucky,” at 2 p.m. Sept. 20, 2025, at the museum, 122 E. Second St.
The public program brings together four historians and authors to examine the complex and often violent role of guerrilla warfare in Kentucky during the Civil War.
Panelists include Derrick Lindow, a history teacher from Owensboro with master’s degrees in education and history and co-administrator of the Western Theater in the Civil War website.
Kentucky historian Gerald Fischer will discuss his research on guerrilla activity. He authored two volumes of “Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Kentucky” and co-authored “Meade County, Kentucky – History & Families,” and has written for The Kentucky Explorer and the Meade County Messenger.
Dr. Tom Sabetta, retired University of Kentucky communication faculty member and the museum’s curator and director of collections and research, will also speak. A published author and former reenactor, he serves on boards including The Battle of Sacramento and the Kentucky Civil War Round Table.
Rounding out the panel is Bryan Bush, author of 14 books including “The Butcher Burbridge,” “Samuel ‘One-Armed’ Berry: Shaker, Teacher, Ruthless Civil War Guerilla,” “Louisville During the Civil War: A History and Guide,” and “Favorite Sons of Civil War Kentucky.” Bush is park manager of the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site and the official Civil War guide for Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.
Admission is $5 and includes all-day general admission to the museum. Seating is limited; attendees are encouraged to arrive early. For more information, call 270-687-2732 or visit owensboromuseum.org.
