Catching a full head of steam, Katie Hagan barreled herself through the lane and finished at the rim. Not allowing Letcher County Central to think, Taylor Mannahan stole the inbound pass, euro stepped, and scored a layup.

As has been the case for the majority of the season, Owensboro Catholic’s defense suffocated the Lady Cougars- forcing 30 turnovers en route to a 59-35 win their opening game of the 2026 Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Girls Basketball Sweet 16.

“This is exactly how we envisioned it,” Owensboro Catholic’s Katie Hagan said. “I think for most of our games, our defense has been our strong part, and that leads into our offense.”

Returning to Rupp Arena for the first time since 2023, nerves weren’t a factor for the Lady Aces, who jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead. Mannhan started the scoring with a layup, Hagan added a pair of baskets, and Layla Martin hit a three from deep.

After calling a timeout, the Lady Cougars took over the game behind Molly Caudill and Kaylee Baker, combining for three threes – handing Letcher County Central a 14-11 lead to start the second quarter.

Despite struggling to end the first quarter, the Lady Aces entered the second quarter with a calm demeanor. Behind Sophia Newby scoring 11 points in the paint, Owensboro Catholic exploded for a 15-0 run and entered halftime leading 35-17. They held the Lady Cougars to just three points in the second quarter.

“I thought we played well tonight, especially after we got our defense going,” Owensboro Catholic Head Coach Michael Robertson said. “We had a little lapse there at the end of the first quarter, but after that, we were all good.”

In the second half, the Lady Aces never allowed Letcher County Central back in the game, recording nine of their 19 steals down the stretch.

Hagan led all scorers with 14 points, and added four rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Newby finished with 13 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal. Munsey hit three threes to go with her 11 points, and Mannahan recorded seven points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Layla Martin left her stamp on the game on the defensive end, recording seven steals and grabbing five rebounds.

“I just wanted to keep the defensive pressure as well as I can,” Martin said. “Especially if I am not hitting all of my shots, I just try to do well on the defensive end as best as I can.”

For the Lady Cougars, Caudill led the way with 11 points and five rebounds, Alli Bailey had six points, three assists, and two blocks, and Sadie Johnson and Anna Hatton both finished with four points.

Next up for the Lady Aces is a date with Simon Kenton, set for later tonight at 6 p.m. EST.

“They have a really good team,” Robertson said. “We will see a lot. We are in the final eight. We just need to keep on going. We need to take care of the next task at hand, and I think the schedule that we played this year got us ready for this. We will go at them.”
