The Owensboro Community and Technical College Foundation has received a $7,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support adult literacy programs in the region.

The grant is part of nearly $16 million awarded nationwide by the foundation to support adult, family, and summer literacy programs across the 48 states where Dollar General operates. According to the foundation, the total marks a record-setting single-day donation, surpassing the $13.2 million awarded in May 2025.

“Receiving support through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation allows us to continue expanding educational opportunities and strengthening literacy skills within our community,” said Lindsey Kafer, director of Adult Education programs at OCTC. “We are grateful for this investment and the positive impact it will have on the students and individuals we serve.”

OCTC serves as the regional provider of Adult Education for adults ages 18 and older in Daviess, Hancock, McLean, and Ohio counties. Programs include instruction in basic academic and workplace skills, GED preparation, Work Keys testing preparation, English as a Second Language courses, and citizenship preparation classes.

“Since the Foundation’s inception in 1993, our focus has remained on making meaningful investments in students, teachers, and the organizations that support literacy and learning at every stage of life,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “We are grateful for the impact teachers and educators make every day and are excited to have another record-setting year of helping expand literacy access for learners of all ages. These funds will help educators enhance their instruction and create opportunities that help empower students to reach their full potential.”

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports nonprofit organizations, schools, and libraries located within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center. Since 1993, the foundation has awarded more than $292 million in grants supporting literacy and education initiatives.

The foundation will also launch its seventh annual Yellow Glasses Project campaign on July 20, allowing customers to purchase yellow sunglasses for $2 at Dollar General stores to benefit literacy programs.
