As summer events and festivals begin across the region, the Green River District Health Department is reminding residents that free Narcan is available throughout its seven-county service area and could help save lives during an opioid overdose emergency.
Narcan, also known as naloxone, is a medication that can quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Health department officials said the medication is safe, easy to use, and available to anyone who may need it.
The health department provides free Narcan at all seven county health centers. Green distribution boxes stocked with free Narcan are also located throughout each county to improve access for residents.
“Having Narcan available in homes, vehicles, workplaces, and at public events can make a critical difference during an emergency,” said Ethan Martin, public information officer for the Green River District Health Department. “We encourage community members to know where Narcan is available and to feel comfortable carrying it.”
According to the health department, opioid overdoses can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Accidental overdoses may involve prescription pain medications, illicit opioids, or substances contaminated with fentanyl.
Officials encourage residents to learn the signs of an opioid overdose, carry Narcan when attending community events and gatherings, know the locations of local Narcan distribution boxes, and call 911 immediately if an overdose occurs.
