They are the Class of 2020, and they will persevere no matter how much the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc on their senior year. A handful of local seniors made a video showcasing everything they’ve been through over the years — and how nothing is strong enough to take them down.

The video is the brainchild of Daviess County High School senior Jada Prater, who had seen some other senior tributes on social media.

“I was like you know what, I have so many connections and relationships with everyone in my class, why wouldn’t I do something like that?” she said. “I was very hesitant at first, but the thing that kept coming back to me was we deserve something like this. Everyone looks forward to their senior year. That’s something that everyone will always remember.”

First, Prater did her research on what has happened during their lifetime. They were born during the time around the 9/11 tragedy, and they grew up during a technological boom that brought with it the first iPhone.

They are also a generation that lives in the social media revolution — which also means they were victims of cyber bullying.

Now, they are on the verge having to spend the rest of their senior year at home as the COVID-19 threat looms everywhere.

Prater said it’s a tough situation, but they are dealing with it as best they can.

“This deserves to be heard, and why wouldn’t we share it with the people we know best by us actually saying it — so it’s more personal and connected,” she said. “If you’re not a senior you don’t understand as much. That’s why I really made it. I just wanted people to understand where we’re coming from and how positive we’re trying to be about it.”

Within 90 minutes of putting out a call for help with the video, Prater had about 50 classmates who volunteered. Within two days everyone sent in their clips, and Prater had the video done within a week.

“We wanted to tell people our story and try to hit that emotion,” she said.

Prater posted the video Saturday night, and already the response has been overwhelming.

“I did not think it was going to blow up this much, especially not in a day,” she said. “It has gotten so much love and so much support. I’ve cried so many times because I’m so thankful for that.”
