William Duval Bushong

December 7, 1926 - October 12, 2018

Dr. William Duval Bushong passed away Friday, October 12, 2018 in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky.  Born December 7, 1926 in Glasgow, KY, a son of the late Paul D. and Willia Mae Duval Bushong, he attended Owensboro schools and at the age of 16 graduated from Owensboro High School in 1943.  He attended Vanderbilt University for a year and a half before joining the United States Navy at the age of 18.  He served as a Pharmacists Mate until he returned to Vanderbilt, where he graduated in 1948.  He worked as an industrial engineer at General Electric in Owensboro following graduation before enrolling in the University of Louisville School of Medicine.  Dr. Bushong served his residency in pediatrics at Louisville Children’s Hospital.  He began his pediatrics practice in Owensboro in 1960, retiring after 37 years of practice.

Dr. Bushong was a long-time member of the Owensboro Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.  His community involvement included service on the boards of directors of the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Community Concert Association, and the Owensboro-Daviess County Health Department.  Professionally Dr. Bushong was a member of the Kentucky and American Medical Associations and was president of the Kentucky Pediatric Society in 1966.  He was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church.  His interests included golf, gardening, and reading.

Dr. Bushong is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda Nalbach Bushong; his daughter, Elizabeth Bushong Straub and her husband Louis, of Louisville; his son, Benjamin Duval Bushong and his wife Denise, of Owensboro; his grandchildren Madeline Straub, Anna Claire Straub, Audrey Laine Bushong, and William Duval Bushong, II; his brother, Paul D. Bushong of Colorado; and his nephew Dr. Craig Bushong of Colorado.  He was preceded in death by a nephew, Paul D. Bushong.

The funeral service for Dr. Bushong will be at  noon Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.  Visitation will be from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday and after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.  Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Good Samaritan Fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist or Hospice of Western Kentucky.
