Betty Reed Edgington

Betty Reed Edgington, 92, of Owensboro, formerly of Winchester, passed away Friday, October 26, 2018, under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Born in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky she was a daughter of the late Tone Marvin Reed and Ann Claire Davis Reed. She graduated from Winchester High School and was a legal secretary for the Hays and Hays law firm. A licensed funeral director, she and her late husband E.L. Edgington, Jr., who passed away in 1997, were the owners of the former Edgington Funeral Home in Winchester.

Mrs. Edgington was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, flower chairman, a Choir Mother, and member of the Watts Circle. As a member of the Clark County-Winchester Heritage Commission she organized and established the Friends of Holly Rood Auxiliary. She was chairman of the Winchester Downtown Courthouse and Public Library Beautification project, a member, former president, and long-time historian of The Little Garden Club, and a member of the Winchester Fine Arts Club. She served 11 years as a Girl Scout leader for Troop 238, shepherding a group of young women from the second grade through high school graduation, in addition to serving as a Cub Scout den mother. Mrs. Edgington was a member and served as president of the Hannah McClure Elementary School PTA and was instrumental in acquiring playground equipment for the then newly-built school. Her community involvement included being a member of the Clark County Hospital Auxiliary, the Guerrant Clinic Auxiliary, the Clark County Band Booster Parent Organization, the Winchester-Clark County Homemakers, and along with her husband and others initiated the first grief support program in Clark County.

Surviving Mrs. Edgington are her children Dr. Lee Edgington and his wife Carol of Winchester and Claire Edgington Roberts and her husband David of Owensboro; her grandchildren David Reed Roberts and his wife Lindsey of Owensboro, and Catherine Roberts Hayes and her husband Ben, of Nashville; her great-granddaughter Phoebe Louise Roberts, of Owensboro; her step-grandchildren Rebecca Tucker and her husband Will of Louisville and Raychell Solley of Richmond; and her step-great-grandchildren Lucy Solley-Smith of Richmond, and Luke Tucker and Evie Tucker, both of Louisville; her sister-in -law Betty Pearl Reed; her nieces Linda Wharton, JoEllen Reed, Terry Reed, and Judy Reed; her nephew Billy Reed; several other great nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family members. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Carl Reed, William Reed and Joe Reed; her sister Grace Reed Price; and her great-granddaughter Scarlett June Roberts; and three nieces; Betty Jo Elam, Pat Noel, and Ann Lisle Reed.

The funeral service for Mrs. Edgington will be 11:00 a.m. EST Wednesday at the Rolan G. Taylor Funeral Home in Winchester. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory in Owensboro and from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. EST Tuesday at the Rolan G. Taylor Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Western Kentucky or The Friends of Holly Rood.
