Athena Cardwell 60, of Calhoun, Kentucky, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Calhoun, Kentucky on Sunday, October 1, 2023. Athena Denise Cardwell was born December 5, 1962, in Calhoun to the late Welton Cardwell and Alma Joyce O’Bannon Cardwell Evans. She was a radiant beacon of love, warmth, and kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Athena’s work history included a period as a bus driver for the McLean County Board of Education, a role she held with immense pride and dedication. Her love for children was evident in her work, and she was respected by both her colleagues and the students she transported. Athena was a hardworking woman, known for her strong work ethic and commitment to her responsibilities.

Beyond her professional life, Athena was a woman of faith and a member of the Community Church in Calhoun. Her faith was an integral part of her life and provided a foundation for her unwavering optimism and resilience.

Athena’s interests were as diverse and vibrant as she was. She had a deep love for her family and friends and cherished the time spent with them. Athena’s granddaughter, Skylar, was the apple of her eye, and her love for her was evident in the joy she radiated in her presence. Athena was also eagerly looking forward to welcoming another grandchild into the world.

Athena had a special affinity for the beach, which she referred to as her ‘happy place.’ She reveled in the serenity of the ocean waves and the warmth of the sun. Her beach trips were a source of rejuvenation and tranquility, and she often returned from these trips with renewed vigor and vitality.

As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate a life well-lived, marked by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community. Athena’s spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the importance of love, faith, and family.

Survivors include a daughter, Kristen Fulton (Andrew) of Calhoun; a granddaughter, Skylar Fulton, with another grandchild on the way; a brother, Chris Cardwell of Calhoun; a sister, Angela Baird (Matt) of Utica; two nephews, Hunter Cardwell and Alek Evans; a niece, Cadense Johnson; a great-nephew, Myles Cardwell; and a great-niece, Emma Evans.

Family services will be held at a later date. Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel is handling the arrangements for Athena’s family.
