Arlan Helton

August 12, 1931 - February 14, 2019

Arlan Helton, 87, of Owensboro passed away Thursday at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Mr. Helton was born August 12, 1931 in Wallins Creek, Kentucky to the late Corbett Helton and Ida Belcher Helton.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Helton also was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Joann in 2018; brothers, James, Ray, and Virgil Helton; sister, Mae Sumlar. Arlan joined the army at an early age and received a purple heart for his service in Korea. He returned to Camp Breckinridge and met his wife and mother of his daughters, Louise Glover, while on leave at the Owensboro waterfront. Arlan owned several businesses but was most known for A&L Market where he made many life long friends. He also worked for Larry’s Market for many years. Arlan was a regular at J.D.’s restaurant and loved talking to people there but was especially fond of Kim and Larry Smith and family. He loved dancing and had a great sense of humor and a magnetic personality.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his daughters, Debbie Helton, Amy Hildebrandt both of Owensboro, and Gail Bennett and husband Chuck of Scottsville, four grandchildren who adored him, Blake Rhoades, Taylor Bennett, Morgan Hildebrandt, and Camrin Bennett; stepchildren, Jeff Philipps (Khatuna) of Dale, Indiana and his children, Estella and Jeffrey whom he adored. He will be missed by all those who loved him.

The family would like to thank his good neighbor, Lois Velotta for all the friendship she showed Arlan. She was always there when he needed her. Also, special thanks to Connie Ashworth for being so devoted to his caregiving.

The funeral service for Mr. Helton will be 2:00 pm Monday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 until 5 pm and Monday from noon until the time of service.
