James Edgar Anderson

September 16, 1931 - February 15, 2019

Dr. James Edgar Anderson, 87, passed away February 15, 2019. Born Sept. 16, 1931 in his grandparent’s home in Robards, KY, he was the only child of the late Mary Katherine McMullin Anderson and Felix Bryan Anderson. James graduated from Corydon High School in 1949 and then attended the University of Kentucky. Following his graduation from the University of Kentucky in 1952, he attended University of Tennessee Medical School where he graduated in 1956. He then was a medical intern at Harper Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. After his medical internship he served in the United States Army from 1957-1959, as a Captain and Battalion Surgeon in the 67th Armored Division in Nuremburg, Germany. Following his service in the Army, he did a surgical residency at Emory University School of Medicine, as well as a surgical fellowship in neoplastic surgery. From Emory University, he joined the Owensboro surgical practice of Davis, Dawson, and McManus in 1964, where he practiced general, vascular and thoracic surgery until 1998. At the time of his retirement the practice was the oldest continuing surgical practice in Kentucky.

His professional affiliations included the Daviess County Medical Society, Kentucky Medical Society, American Medical Society and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Anderson’s community leadership included service on the Owensboro Symphony Board of Directors and the Owensboro Symphony Foundation Board, which he served as president, and as a member of the Owensboro Hospital Foundation Board. An avid fan of University of Kentucky basketball, he was named a UK Fellow, and was a member of the UK Alumni Advisory Board. For many years he was a member of the Owensboro Rotary Club. Travelling was his passion and he spent many wonderful years enjoying the mountains and downhill skiing. He served as a board member and president of The Gant Homeowners Association in Aspen, Co. His membership in First Presbyterian Church spanned 55 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife June Harris Anderson and grandson Evan James Anderson.

He is survived by his loving wife Karen Rhoads Anderson; his children Jennifer Anderson Bell (Bruce), of Lexington, Julie Anderson Holmes of Atlanta, Dr. James D. Anderson (Amy) of Atlanta, and Jeane Marie Anderson Nichols (Chris) of Birmingham, AL; his grandchildren; Thomas Bell of Denver, Juliana Bell Knechtle (William) of Durham, NC, Elizabeth Bell Cassada (Grayson) of Dallas, Jacqueline Bell of New York, NY, Lee Holmes of Henderson, NV, Marilyn Holmes of Atlanta, Sam Holmes of Atlanta, Meredith Anderson of New York, NY, John David Anderson of Atlanta, and Ella Nichols, James Nichols, and Margaret Nichols, all of Birmingham, AL; and 2 great-grandchildren.

The service for Dr. Anderson will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, where the family will receive friends following the service until 3:30. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Owensboro Symphony Foundation or First Presbyterian Church.
