Charles Maurice Payne

January 30, 1927 - February 21, 2019

Charles Maurice Payne passed away peacfully on February 21, 2019. Maurice was born on January 30, 1927, to Charles O. and Bernice Hamilton Payne. He was a life-long resident of Daviess County and farmed until his retirement. He was a self-taught mechanic and for years worked farming during the day and as a mechanic at night for his own operations and also that of his neighbors. Maurice was a life-long member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and held a dual membership at Immaculate Catholic Church since 1998. Maurice was a former National Director for the National Farmers Organization (NFO); he also served as a member of the State Board of Directors of NFO and was elected President of the Daviess County Chapter of the NFO.
Maurice was an active member of St. Anthony’s Church and served on the finance committee. He was instrumental in organizing the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Anthony’s; he was a member of the Cursillo Movement and a member of Renew 2000.
Maurice served on the Help Office Board for several years. He was a past member of the Daviess County Extension Council. Maurice was a veteran of WWII and served in Panama. He was the most valuable player of the Western Kentucky Catholic Basketball Tournament in 1944-45 and attended St. Joe Academy.

Preceding Maurice in death were his parents and his brothers, Robert and Richard Payne. In 1992 his first wife, Wanda Rose Cashen Payne, the mother of his six children passed away after 45 years of marriage. His second wife, Gilbert Jean “Duppy” Cecil died in 2008 after ten years of marriage.

Surviving Maurice is his wife, Margaret Hall Payne. Six children also mourn his passing; they are his three sons: Rodney M. Payne of Huntsville, Alabama, Jerry L. (Bonnie) Payne of Fort Branch, Indiana, and Terry Joe Payne of Owensboro. His three daughters are: Pamela (Dan) Shepherd of Owensboro, Joyce S. Payne of Weeki Wachee, Florida, and Tina (Jon) Guth of Fort Thomas, Kentucky. Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren will miss his smile and his hugs. Maurice is also survived by his sister, Lorena Sublett of Tulsa, Oklahoma and his brother and sister-in-law, William and Rosemary Payne of Owensboro. Numerous nieces, nephews, step-children and in-laws share in the loss of his earthly presence.

The funeral mass will be 11 am Monday February 25, 2019 at Saint Anthony Catholic Church with Father Tony Jones and Father Mark Buckner officiating. Visitation on Sunday will be from 1 until 4 pm at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with prayers at 4pm. Visitation Monday will begin at 9 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Anthony Cemetery.
