
DRAKESBORO, KY., Darriel Ray Sweeney, 84, of Drakesboro passed away on September 28th, 2024 at the Heartford House in Owensboro KY. He was born in Muhlenberg County on April 8th, 1940 the son of Rev. Calvin Joseph Sweeney and Gladys Marie Jameson Sweeney. He worked for R. E. Getty Paving and G&W Paving in Bowling Green KY. He was of the Assembly of God faith, he loved farming and was well-known in the county for his sweet watermelons. He enjoyed socializing, as well as visiting the local flea market. His nickname was Claw Hammer, a reflection of his love for CB radios.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elizabeth Casebier, 2 brothers Vondell Lee Sweeney and J.C. Sweeney, 2 sisters Jean Millard and Edna Mae Day.
He is survived by 2 sons Darron Sweeney (Ingrid) Clarksville, TN and Shawn (Stephanie) Sweeney of Bowling Green, 2 stepdaughters Audra (Cliff) Jenkins Baumert of Florida and Michelle Riffel of Kansas, a grandson Trenton, a granddaughter Madison, several step grand and great-grandchildren, a brother Leon Sweeney of Greenville, 3 sisters Diann (Charles) Graham of Greenville, Karen Dukes of Greenville, and Sharon (Wyatt) Oates of Graham, his mother-in-law Dorothy Casebier of Drakesboro, several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 10:00 AM until time of funeral at Gary’s Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville, KY. Burial will follow in Joines Chapel Cemetery in Clifty KY.
