It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gunnar Sinclair Tapp, who departed this world at his home on October 1, 2024, at the age of 42. Gunnar was not just a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather and uncle; he was a light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on August 17,1982 and raised in the welcoming community of Owensboro, Kentucky, Gunnar radiated warmth and kindness throughout his life. He was a proud father to his cherished daughter, Gunniah Tapp, and to Nathaniel “Nate” Thompson, both of whom he adored beyond measure. Gunnar was also a devoted grandfather to Ka’Brella Buckner and Yara Buckner, who brought him immeasurable joy.
He is survived by his loving parents, Pastor Clarence and Vera Tapp, whose unwavering support shaped him into the remarkable man he became. He leaves behind a bond with his six sisters: Tracy Curry (Billy) of Owensboro, KY; Denisha Shemwell of Cincinnati, Ohio; Deonna Tapp (Eric) of Hopkinsville, KY; Miranda Ford (Donnie) of Paducah, KY; Dorothy Outerbridge (Mason) of Owensboro, KY; and Elizabeth Tapp of Chicago, IL. As well, he viewed Daniel Riley and Demarko Griffith as special brothers. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews and leaves behind many cousins, as well as aunts and uncles, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Gunnar was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Pastor Dorothy Crowe and Geraldine Riley “Doll Baby,” grandfathers, Clarence Robert Tapp Sr. and Bertram Riley Sr. His great-grandparents, Vera Lee Hinton, affectionately known as ‘Memomie,’ Lucian Moorman, Camp Gertrude Douglas, James Curtis Douglas, Mary Elizabeth Flowers, known to many as ‘Mother Flowers,’ and Reverend Eria Cosby. The love of his grandparents had a profound impact on his life.
Known for his bright smile and genuine spirit, Gunnar had the remarkable ability to uplift those around him. Friends and family will remember him for his unwavering support, his laughter, and his passion for life. A highlight of Gunnar’s youth was his time on the football field as a proud member of the OHS Red Devils, proudly wearing jersey number 55. He continued his passion for football briefly at Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he formed lasting friendships and unforgettable memories.
The memories of Gunnar will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. While his time with us was far too short, his legacy of love, strength, and authenticity will be celebrated and remembered.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM CST at McFarland Funeral Home, 1001 W 5th St, Owensboro, KY 42301. A memorial service honoring his life and legacy will take place on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 5:30 PM at Fourth Street Baptist Church at 821 W. 4th Street, Owensboro, KY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to support Gunniah and Nate’s future endeavors, as they continue to carry forward Gunnar’s spirit and values.
