Larry Drake Cary

April 4, 1941 - May 19, 2019

Larry Drake Cary, 78, of Owensboro, KY went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2019 following cancer treatment and intervention at the Augusta University Medical Center in Augusta, GA.

Known to many as “L.D.”, he was born on April 4, 1941 to Clifford Drake Cary and Mabel Caskey Cary at their home in Weir, KY. The first of three children, L.D. spent his early years growing up on their family farm just south of Greenville, KY in the Weir community. Following his graduation from Muhlenberg Central High School in 1959, L.D. decided to pass on several college scholarships to play basketball in order to pursue an offer to play baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. After pitching for 4 years in the Minor Leagues he returned home to Muhlenberg County where he was employed by Peabody Coal Company, River Queen Mines. He later went into business for himself owning and operating heavy equipment, drilling oil and gas wells and developing the Canyon Run Resort on Lake Malone. L.D. was a member of the Christ Community Church in Owensboro. He loved life and never met a stranger. He was a true sports fanatic. L.D. never turned down the opportunity to shoot baskets with the kids or take part of the day to play a round of golf. He could always be found on a Sunday afternoon in his favorite chair, watching anything on television that involved a ball of any sort.

L.D. is preceded in death by his parents, Drake and Mabel Cary, and his beloved brother-in-law, Gary L. Davis.

L.D. adored and loved his family. He was so proud when talking about his children to anyone and happiest when he had all of his family around him. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Janey H. Cary; one brother, Ron Cary (Brenda) of Greenville, KY; one sister, Sandra C. Davis of Greenville, KY; two daughters, Jill Meister Taylor (Bruce) of Madisonville, KY and Dr. Paige Drew (Joey) of Evans, GA; a son, Drake Cary (Tiffany) of Belle Isle, FL; his grandchildren, Dominic “Pup” Meister (Cherish), Cannon Ward, Mattie Drew, Rynn Cary; and a great-grandson, Mason Meister. L.D. is also survived and loved dearly by his Aunt Marie Vevers of Florence, OR, Aunt Ruthie Daniels of Garden Grove, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 23 at 2:00 pm at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro, KY, with Pastor Myke Templeton officiating. Burial will be at the Lone Star Baptist Church Cemetery in Greenville, KY.
