
James Francis “Jim” Marrett passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025. He was born on June 11, 1935 in Owensboro, Kentucky to the late Francis “Nick” Marrett and Louise Mulligan Marrett.
Jim graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School and attended Brescia College. He worked at McAtee’s Department Store during high school and remained there until 1965 as an assistant manager. After McAtee’s he worked for the US Postal Service. He retired from the Postal Service in 1992 after 28 years of service. He was an early member of the Owensboro Federal Credit Union where he served on various boards. He was a lifelong member of St. Stephen Cathedral, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Knights of Columbus and a Kentucky Colonel.
He was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Emma Lou Marrett, and a son Larry Sowders
He is survived by his children Jamey Gumm of Louisville, Robin Morrill (Kevin) of Owensboro, John Mark Sowders (Becky) of Louisville, and Cindy Boykin (Rick) of Elizabethtown, KY; nine grandchildren, Jonathan (Jill) Velotta of Pittsburgh, PA, Daniel Gumm of Louisville, Jessica (Stephen) Luethi of Indianapolis, IN, Lauren (Vince) Lynch of Union, KY; Hayden, William Marrett and Jack Sowders of Louisville, Cameron (Brittany) Boykin of Radcliff, KY and Cody Boykin of Bonnieville, KY; and nine great grandchildren, Zoey and Jackson Luethi, Jonah and Jane Emma Velotta, Stella James and Leo Lynch, Harper Gumm, and Nolan and Corbin James Boykin. Jim is also survived by his sisters Joan Englert and Becky (Larry) Horsman of Owensboro, his brother Robert Marrett (Linda) of Louisville, KY, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at St. Stephen Cathedral with Father John Thomas and Father Tony Jones residing. Entombment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to visitation at St. Stephen Cathedral on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to the bereavement meal at St. Stephen following burial.
