It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Joshua Adam “Josh” Maffia, 49, of Owensboro, Kentucky. Josh was born in Tell City on June 2, 1975, to Frank Maffia and Judy Nolan Moskos. Josh was a devoted husband to his wife, Shelly Brown Maffia, proud dad, loving Papaw, and a true friend to so many.
Those left to cherish Josh’s memory include his devoted wife, Shelly; his parents, Frank and Judy; his nine children, Tyler, Ethan, Drew, Autumn, Reece, Carter Maffia, Kyra, Adalyn, and Ellie Gentry; his five grandchildren, Dexter, Kooper Maffia, Dawson Gehlhausen, Kaycen and Kyrie Bonmon — his little buddy, Kaycen, was truly Papaw’s best friend – and his siblings, James, Steven, Billy Maffia, and Emily Riley.
Josh is most recently preceded in death by a special grandmother, Lola Lawson.
A proud Catholic, Josh was strong in his faith and found great joy and fellowship within his church community at St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Josh was passionate about sports — whether it was hitting the golf course, cheering for the IU Hoosiers, or rooting for his beloved New York Mets. He found tremendous joy in teaching his youngest son, Carter, the game of golf and encouraging his love for baseball.
He took great pride in his work at Unifirst and he cared deeply about each member of his team.
Some of his happiest moments were spent on the golf course and traveling with family — with cruising being one of his favorite adventures.
Even in his passing, Josh continued his legacy of kindness and generosity by giving the gift of life through organ donation. His final act of compassion speaks volumes about the man he was — always thinking of others and finding ways to make a difference.
Above all else, Josh loved his family fiercely and lived each day with a joyful heart, a bright smile, and a spirit full of love, humor, and kindness. He will be remembered for his quick wit, infectious smile, charming spirit, and unwavering devotion to family and faith. His legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty will continue to live on through all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was funny, full of life, and always smiling
“In our laughter, in our games, in our travels, and in our prayers — you are forever with us.”
