
BELTON – Terry Lee Shutt, 77, of Belton, passed away on Monday May 5, 2025. He was born March 8, 1948, the son of Henry and Bertha Shutt. Terry married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Maxberry, on August 26, 1967. They were married for a total of 57 years. Terry was a long-time teacher, coach, and administrator, graduating from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. He was then asked to be a graduate assistant in the English Department, and taught English 101 for WKU. Moving to secondary education in the public schools, he taught in the Warren County Public School System for four years, and was named an Outstanding Young Educator in 1974. Terry then returned home to Muhlenberg County, where he taught at Graham High School and coached the girls’ basketball team. He then transferred to Hughs-Kirk High School, the school he graduated from in 1966. During these years in public education, he earned his Master of Arts and Rank 1 and principal certification, grades 1-12.
During his years at Hughes-Kirk High School, Terry performed several duties. He coached the girls’ basketball team to two 10th District titles. He also coached the baseball team, the girls’ softball team, and in the summer, he coached the Babe Ruth baseball team. The summer program, known as the Hughes-Kirk Playground, provided, under Terry’s leadership, Little League, and T-Ball experiences for students. Following consolidation of the schools, he taught at Muhlenberg South High School, and eventually became Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. Terry closed out his career as Assistant Principal at Muhlenberg South Middle School. He was a life-long member of the Beechmont Church of Christ (formerly the Beech Creek Church of Christ).
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bertha Shutt; a brother, Bobby Wayne Shutt; a niece, Sherri Jones; and three brothers-in-law, Jerry Jones, Bennie Goodman, and Jimmie Maxberry.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth Maxberry Shutt; a son, Terry Lee Shutt, Jr. (Dana); granddaughters, Brescia Crick (Brandon) and Jessica Piper (Cody); a great-grandson, Ethan Crick; two great-granddaughters, Brenan Piper and Sadie Crick; a sister, Patricia Jones; sisters-in-law, Gayla Goodman and Regina Shutt; nieces, Samantha Goodman Nasielski and Dawn Goodman; nephews, Lance Shutt, Wesley Maxberry and Eric Jones. He is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 9, 2025 at 2PM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Bro. Barry Silvey officiating. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8PM at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.tuckerfuneralhomes.com.
