
Dorothy “Dot” Smithson, 92, of Owensboro, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2019 at her home. She was born March 21, 1927 in Daviess Co. to the late Russell S. and Ruey Ethel Swift Shifley. Dot was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired as a librarian with the Owensboro Independent School System. Early in her career, she taught at Stanley Elementary School and then became librarian at Goodloe Elementary and Foust Elementary Schools before retiring in 1991. Dot received her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Kentucky Wesleyan College. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, loved genealogy, and was active with the McLean Co. History Museum and the Regional Family Research Center. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David W. Smithson on July 24, 2012 and her brother, Russell “Rick” Shifley.
Surviving are her sons, Anthony Smithson and wife Toby of Hilton Head, S.C., Denny Smithson and wife Julie of Hilton Head, S.C., and Mark Smithson and wife Susan of Louisville, eight grandchildren, Blair (Amy) Smithson of Owensboro, Ben (Sibyl) Smithson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Matthew (Julie) Smithson of Gypsum, Colorado, Andrew Smithson of Chicago, Illinois, Gregory (Jordan) Smithson of Nicholasville, Chay (Amy) Smithson of Louisville, Sara Smithson of Asheville, N.C., and Zach (Carolyn) Stern of Sugar Hill, Georgia, and one great grandchild, Norah Smithson of Gypsum.
The Funeral Service for Dorothy Smithson will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 6, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Friday and from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
