Michael James Murphy, 84, of Owensboro passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the Heartford House under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of W. Kentucky. The Louisville native was born December 14, 1941, to the late Stephen James Murphy and Jane Riley Murphy. Michael graduated from Rockport (IN) High School with the class of 1959 and served as a member of the Army Reserves for many years. He never met a stranger, a quality which served him well, as he managed the 231 Motor Lodge and as he welcomed visitors to the Executive Inn from the front desk. Michael delivered Meals-On-Wheels for Canteen Services for many years until his retirement, always engaging those he served in conversation and showing a genuine interest in their welfare.
Mike attended his first Kentucky Wesleyan basketball game at 11 years of age and from then on until his passing, he was an avid supporter, missing as few games as possible, whether they were at home or away.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Grazyna Murphy; sister, Ann Murphy Kincheloe both of Owensboro; nephews, Dr. Buxton L. Johnson (Tina) of Tomball, TX, Christopher D. Johnson (Cara) of Boise, ID, Stephen M. Johnson (Kim) of Owensboro; niece, Suzanne G. Martinek of Denver, CO; and many great nieces and nephews.
A Time of Remembrance will be held noon Friday, April 10 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. A private burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery.
