Gene Winstead

December 7, 1936 - September 16, 2019

Gene Winstead, 82, of Owensboro, died of cancer in the comfort of his own home with his family by his side on Monday, September 16, 2019. He was born on December 7, 1936 in Cookeville, TN to the late Golman & Hilma Winstead. Gene retired from SIGECO Warrick Cully Power Plant after 25 years. Gene loved watching sports of all kinds, the Kentucky Wildcats were his favorite team. He also enjoys spending time at his lake house at Rough River. Gene was a loving father and grandfather and he was so proud of his family. He was loved by all his friends and neighbors. He was known as “The Mayor” of his street that he lived on. He always watched out and helped his neighbors and enjoyed being called the mayor. He is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Winstead; son, Randy Lee Winstead; brother, Melvin Winstead; and sister, Camelia Igleheart.

Survivors include his three children, Rebecca Kay Carroll (Gary), Bruce Winstead (Michele), and Tammy R. Hayden (Barry); stepson, Tim (Trish) Green; stepdaughter, Vickie Skaggs; the mother of his four children and best friend, Norma Sharp Lauderdale; his companion and caregiver, Mary Ann Hillyard; thirteen grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Winstead.

Celebration of life service will be at noon on Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will be in Utica Cemetery. Visitation is from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday and after 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
