Jean Coin Fagala

Jean Coin Fagala 97, of Owensboro, Kentucky met Jesus on the stairs at the gates of Heaven on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Viola Jean Edmonds was born February 22, 1929 in Island, Kentucky to the late Lawrence Dewey ‘Bud’ and Anna ‘Rooney’ Gertrude Harrison Edmonds, she was the last surviving child of her parents, and was better known as ‘Jean’ to both her family and friends. Jean was married to Frederick Allen Coin, with whom she had her beloved children, who died in 1988 and was later married to Orin Henry Fagala, who died in 2012.

After graduating high school, Jean hopped on a train at the Island Depot, headed towards Chicago, to work as a telephone operator, which was a bold decision for a woman of that time period. She would later return home to Island, marry Allen Coin, and start their family. Jean was a woman who loved the family that she built. Family always came first, but she was also determined to achieve her dreams. Jean was ahead of her time like several women of the era, as it had become more acceptable for women to work outside the home and rear children. She went on to work full time at General Electric in Owensboro, retiring in 1974.

After their marriage, Jean and Orin had a life full of travel destinations, living in three different states, golfing adventures, and the sweet chaos of combining two families with all of their children. In her golden years, Jean thrived on helping her children, with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved all her “grandbabies”. Granny is what she was to all the grands. Granny and Poppas’ (Orin) house was a rotating door of love, acceptance, discipline, shopping trips, vacations, and helping hands. The door was always opened with a Howdy-do!

Jean was a former member of the Owensboro Country Club and the Campbell Club in Owensboro. She was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and a member of Seattle Memorial United Methodist Church in Owensboro. Jean enjoyed gardening, golfing, shopping, and luncheons with her friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, her giving nature, her desire to help, and her firm belief anything can get done with a little determination and “elbow grease”.

In addition to her parents and two husbands, Jean was preceded in death by two sons, Ardy Benton Coin and Tony Coin; two daughters, Brenda Abney and Karen Crowe; two stepsons, Jim Fagala and Mike Fagala; a great-grandson, Christopher Dant; and her siblings, Dewey Edmonds, Millie Moore, Anna Marie Edmonds, and Bonnie Frizzell.

Jean is survived by her son, Barry Coin (Kathy) of Island; ten grandchildren, Melissa Yates (Scott), Todd Zuehl, Angela Pople (Bobby), Andrew Coin (Jackie), Adam Coin, Aaron Coin, Melanie Cole, Wesley Crowe, Kimberly Crowe, and Bryan Coin (Katy); 12 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in the Island Community Cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with Jean’s family from 11:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. Saturday at Musters in Livermore.
