
Mary Jane “Nanny” Shelton, 93, passed away July 17, 2026, at home surrounded by loved ones. Mary Jane was born October 17, 1932, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to the late Roy F. and Mary Helen Hoskins Carlin. Mary Jane spent most of her life as a homemaker, caring for her husband Bill, their 6 children, and the many grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of St. Martin Catholic Church, where she was a member of the St. Martin Altar Society women’s club.
Mary Jane and Bill enjoyed square dancing with the Merry Makers. She spent many hours enjoying old episode of “Gunsmoke”, cheering on her UK basketball team, and going to casinos to enjoy slot machines and other entertaining games.
Along with her parents, Mary Jane is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, William “Bill” Shelton. They were married on February 2, 1950.
She is survived by her children, William “Bill” (Ann) Shelton Jr. of Louisville, Norman “Wayne” (Karen) Shelton of Philpot, James (Shelly) Shelton of Madisonville, Janet (Paul) Layman of Utica, Lea Ann Wilson of Owensboro, and Michael “Mike” Shelton of Owensboro; grandchildren, Lyn (Bryan) Snider, Elizabeth (Jacob) Simmons, William III (Kristin) Shelton, Benjamin (Stephanie) Shelton, Karissa (Jeremy) Riter, Charlie (Becky) Shelton, Derek (Michelle) Shelton, Kaylie Adcock, Taylor (Josh) Reed, Jody Shelton, Brian (Chelsea) Layman, Paul W. Layman, Rob (Samantha) Phillips, Sara (Clayton) Schimp, Steve (Meghan) Phillips, Mike (Ashley) Phillips, Allee (Bradley) Kirtley, Edward (Lauren) Wilson, Maggie (Jordan) Miller, Jane Dawson Shelton, Michael Shelton, Alyssa (Landon) Upton, and Ryker (Chelsea) Shelton; 53 great-grandchildren; brother, Mike (Beth) Carlin; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Byron and (the late) Diane Lane.
Service will be 10:30 am on Thursday, July 23 at St. Martin Catholic Church with Father Pat Bittel celebrating. Burial to follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 22, at Glenn Funeral Home & Crematory, with prayers at 6:00 pm, and again on Thursday July 23 from 9:30 am until the time of the funeral service.
