HS: Soccer teams compete; 4 VB teams win; AHS XC 2nd

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

Several teams were in action Thursday night. Click each headline below to read more. Apollo’s boys golf team was scheduled to play, but the match was cancelled.

SOCCER
Jenkins, Saltsman each have hat trick in Red Devils’ win
Boys Soccer — Owensboro 6, Owensboro Catholic 1
Owensboro (4-2-1, 1-2 District 9) picked up their fist district win on the road at Owensboro Catholic (2-5, 0-3). The Red Devils are on a three-game win streak and have scored 20 goals in their last five contests.

Paxton Jenkins and Andrew Saltsman scored three goals each in the win. Each had one score in the first half and two in the second half. Austin Sovar had three assists, while Grayson McFarland and Fermin Mosqueda had one assist a piece. The Red Devils had 28 total shots, with 14 on goal.
Cole Blandford had the lone goal for the Aces by scoring on a penalty kick. Boone McElroy had four saves in goal.

Up next for Owensboro is a 7 p.m. Tuesday match against Madisonville-North Hopkins.
Owensboro Catholic travels to Hopkins County Central at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lady Aces finish in tie with Ohio County
Girls Soccer — Owensboro Catholic 2, Ohio County 0
Owensboro Catholic (5-1-1, 3-0 District 9) scored a pair of goals in the first half, but Ohio County rallied to even the score to finish the game with a tie.

The Lady Aces got on the board 3 minutes in off a goal by Amelia Fusco with an assist from Emma Eyre. Another goal came 8 minutes later when Izzy Stanfield found Natalie Goodwin for a score. Ohio County cut the lead in half 6 minutes into the second frame, and eventually tied the game with only 1:30 to play.

Owensboro Catholic will now host Apollo (2-4, 0-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lady Panthers fall short on road
Girls Soccer — Henderson County 2, Daviess County 0
Daviess County (2-3-1, 2-1 District 9) was shut out on the road Tuesday. No stats were available for the game.

They play again at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against McCracken County.

VOLLEYBALL
E-Gals continue success in road match
Volleyball — Apollo 3, Hopkinsville 0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-16)
Apollo (9-3, 2-0 District 9) earned their sixth consecutive — and eighth toal — sweep of the season Thursday at Hopkinsville.

The team was lead by Carlee Widmer (20 assists, 4 aces, 5 kills), Jenna McMillen (12 kills), Natalie Ewing (7 kills, 2 blocks) and Hallie Wilson (6 digs, 3 aces).

The E-Gals play again at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Daviess County (9-5, 1-1).

Lady Raiders extend win streak, beat Grayson County
Volleyball — Trinity 3, Grayson County 1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24)
Trinity (10-2, 3-0 District 12) picked up a sixth consecutive win in a tight match, and they have yet to lose at home this season.

The Lady Raiders were led by Savannah Aull (11 kills, 8 assists), Nina Wathen (9 kills, 12 assists), Jenna McDowell (4 blocks, 2 kills) and Mary Hardesty (2 blocks).

Trinity plays again at 7:30 Tuesday when they travel to McLean County.

Lady Panthers roll through Ohio County
Volleyball — Daviess County 3, Ohio County 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-9)
Daviess County got their fifth sweep of the season with a home victory over Ohio County. The Lady Panthers (9-5, 1-1 District 9) only have a single home loss this year.

Leading the way for DCHS were Elizabeth Moore (8 kills), Ashton Johnson (8 kills) and Kinsley Phelps (5 kills, 3 blocks, 2 assists). Also helping the cause for the Lady Panthers were Sarah Merritt (4 kills), Hannah Axley (8 assists, 2 aces), Delaney Evans (10 assists), Sydney Speed (7 digs) and Kendal Goetz (5 digs).

Daviess County travels to Apollo (9-3, 2-0) for a district match at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lady Devils earn sweep at home
Volleyball — Owensboro 2, Frederick Fraize 0 (25-13, 25-13)
Owensboro (3-13, 0-2 District 9) won in a best-of-three match against Frederick Fraize. Krystell Pappas led the team with 10 aces and 4 kills. Also helping were Mykael Winstead (3 aces, 3 digs), Kennedy Thompson (2 aces, 3 assists, 2 digs) and Jersie Rhineburger (7 digs).

The Lady Devils play again at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Owensboro Catholic (1-5, 1-1).

CROSS COUNTRY
E-Gals take second at Alan Hopewell Invitational
Girls Cross Country — Apollo
As a team, Apollo finished second overall in both the upperclassmen and lowerclassmen races.

Scoring runners in the junior/senior race were Sammi Roberts (21:32, 2nd place overall), Angel King (24:09, 11th) and Caroline Boarman (24:09, 13th).

Scoring runners for the freshman/sophomore race were Abby Rummage (22:21, 4th place overall), Baylee Hare (22:38, 8th) and Caroline Ashby (24:20, 20th), who set a personal record.

Apollo will be in action again Sept. 8 at the Owensboro Invitational at Yellow Creek Park.
