“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

The Owensboro Marlins Swim Team competed in the Southern Senior Zones Championship and the Southern Age Group Zones. Apollo and Owensboro Catholic participated in day one of the Bluegrass State Games Volleyball Tournament. John Augenstein, an Owensboro Catholic alum, played in the Western Amateur.

Marlins Swim Team

Four swimmers for the Marlins are competing at the Southern Senior Zones at the Huntsville Aquatics Center in Huntsville, Alabama. In the Friday morning prelims, Gavin Fuchs placed 46th in the 100 Backstroke and 91st in the 400 Freestyle; Sean Boone placed 69th in the 400 Freestyle and 56th in the 100 Breaststroke; Samantha Phillips placed 18th in the 400 Freestyle and 14th in the 100 Fly; and Michael Hampel placed 1st in the 100 Breaststroke.

Phillips and Hampel both advanced to the Friday finals. Hampel took 1st in the 100 Breaststroke, while Phillips finished 22nd in the 400 Freestyle and 14th in the 100 Fly.

Abby Warren competed for the Marlins in the Southern Age Group Zones, held at COM Aquatics in Midland, Texas. She finished 18th in the 100 Breaststroke.

Both tournaments end Saturday.

Apollo Volleyball

In day one, the E-Gals won both games of pool play to hold on to a top seed. Apollo beat Southwestern 23-21, 21-10 and Scott County 21-16, 21-17. In day two, they will face Pikeville, Thomas Nelson and Bowling Green in another round of pool play.

In JV action, the E-Gals picked up a pair of victories to win their pool. They beat Lafayette (team 2) 21-13, 12-21, 15-8 and Scott County (red team) 21-15, 21-18. Apollo advanced to play Scott County (blue team), Tates Creek and Thomas Nelson.

Owensboro Catholic Volleyball

The Lady Aces finished in first place of their pool by defeating South Laurel 21-19, 21-19 and Bardstown 21-14, 21-16. They move on to play North Hardin, Christian Fellowship and Dunbar (black team) in the second round.

The JV squad fell to Scott County (blue team) 21-10, 21-14 and Lafayette (team one) 21-10, 21-12. They face Simon Kenton and Ryle in day two action.

John Augenstein (Owensboro Catholic graduate now paying for Vanderbilt)

Augenstein posted rounds of 64, 68, 68 and 70 in stroke play at the Western Amatuer, held at Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield, Illinois. His 13th-place finish allowed him to advance to match play, where the top 16 players face off head-to-head until only one remains.

Augenstein won his first match against Collin Morikawa, but he could not hold on to a late lead against Brandon Wu and advance to the quarterfinals. Augenstein was up two with two holes to go, but Wu got the score all square to force a playoff. Wu won the first hole to eliminate Augenstein.
