“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

The Owensboro Marlins Swim Team competed in the Southern Senior Zones Championship and the Southern Age Group Zones. Apollo and Owensboro Catholic participated in day two of the Bluegrass State Games Volleyball Tournament. The Kentucky Spartans football team finished their regular season.

Others teams in action that results were not available for include: Daviess County boys golf in the Battle of the Bridges tournament; Apollo, Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic boys golf in the Dawson Springs Invitational at the Pennyrile State Park; and Owensboro Catholic girls golf in the Lady Maroons Classic at Madisonville Country Club.

Marlins Swim Team

At the Southern Senior Zones, Gavin Fuchs placed 105th in the 200 IM and 82nd in the 50 Freestyle. Overall, the team finished 28th out of 58 teams in the tournament, held at the Huntsville Aquatics Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

At the Southern Age Group Zones, Abby Warren placed 44th in the 200 IM, 32nd in the 50 Freestyle and 8th in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Warren competed for team Kentucky, who finished 8th out of 13 teams in the tournament at COM Aquatics in Midland, Texas.

Apollo Volleyball

The E-Gals remained undefeated in day two of pool play to advance to the Championship Flight. Apollo beat Pikeville 21-13, 21-8; Thomas Nelson 21-11, 21-7; and Bowling Green 22-20, 21-15. The tournament now shifts to single elimination, where the E-Gals face off with Manual in the first round. Four wins would crown Apollo as tournament champions.

The JV team went 1-2 after beating Tates Creek 21-11, 12-21, 15-12 and losing to Scott County (blue team) 19-21, 21-10, 9-15 and Thomas Nelson 16-21, 13-21. They will play in Flight 3 of single elimination, starting with a game against Henry Clay (white team).

Owensboro Catholic Volleyball

The Lady Aces went 1-2 in day two of pool play, where they beat North Hardin 21-17, 21-19 and lost to Christian Fellowship 14-21, 21-18, 4-15 and Dunbar (black team) 16-21, 8-21). They will play in Flight 2 in the elimination round, starting with Frederick Douglas.

The JV team lost both games Saturday, falling to Simon Kenton 10-21, 16-21, 17-21 and to Ryle 18-21, 19-21, 21-17, 23-22. They play in Flight 6 of the elimination round, where they have a bye and await the winner of Greenup County and Lexington Catholic.

Kentucky Spartans

The Spartans ended their regular season with a 14-6 win over the River City Hurricanes at Flaget Field in Louisville. The Spartans finished with an 8-1 record, locking up a No. 1 seed for playoffs.
