Yesterday in Sports: Soccer, volleyball

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

Owensboro Catholic hosted Daviess County in boys soccer. Apollo girls soccer played at home against Caldwell County. Daviess County and Owensboro volleyball teams each played at home. The scheduled Apollo girls golf was cancelled.

Boys Soccer

Daviess County (2-0) scored early and held on to a strong lead for a 7-1 win over Owensboro Catholic (1-1). For the Panthers, Brian Winkler and Declan Sandifer both scored two goals each, while Hunter Clark, Jacob Boling and Max Miller all got on the board with one goal. The Aces goal came from Kevin Piedrahita with an assist from Cole Blandford.

Girls Soccer

Apollo (0-2) lost 2-1 at home against Caldwell County. The E-Gals has six shots on goal, with the lone score coming from Gracie Cart off an assist by Natalie Smith. Goalkeeper Zoe Floyd had five saves. Apollo plays again at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hopkinsville.

Owensboro Catholic (1-1) lost 3-1 on the road at Castle (Ind.). After allowing two goals at the half, head coach Kelly Brannock said the Lady Aces talked at halftime about the slow start and challenged each other to pick it up. She said she was happy with the way they fought back and played to a 1-1 tie in the second half. Emma Eyre scored the only goal for the Lady Aces, who play Bullitt East at 11:30 Saturday at home.

Volleyball

Daviess County (2-0) rolled through Frederick Fraize for a 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-11) win at home. The Lady Panthers play today and Saturday in the Apollo Summer Slam Tournament.

Owensboro (1-3) fell 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-23) against Grayson County at home. They will also play in the Apollo Summer Slam.
