Apollo soccer falls short; KWC has busy weekend

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

The Apollo boys soccer team wrapped up their weekend tournament. Several Kentucky Wesleyan teams were in action over the weekend.

Apollo falls 4-3 in final game of weekend tournament
The Eagles (5-6, 2-2 District 9) were tied at halftime but a pair of second-half goals by Franklin County resulted in a 4-3 loss for Apollo. The Eagles got two goals from Jaelin Kirk and one from Harrison Bowman. Brandon Greer had the only assist.

Apollo finished the weekend 1-2 after beating West Jessamine and losing to Hopkinsville in two their Saturday games of the Boots and Butts Soccer Classic. The Eagles return to action with a 7 p.m. match Tuesday at Owensboro Catholic (3-7, 0-4 District 9).

Panthers earn two conference victories
The Panthers picked up wins both Saturday and Sunday to move to 7-5 on the season and 2-2 in G-MAC play.

KWC rolled to victory Saturday with a sweep over Davis & Elkins 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-22). The Panthers trailed 21-18 before Alexa Davis started a rally that helped them win the first set.

The Senators again had a late lead in the second set, but a 9-0 Panthers run helped turn it around. The final set was even throughout, and KWC was able to get the clean sweep.

Nilah Roy had 10 kills and 11 digs, while Lydia Jackson finished with 24 assists.

Sunday’s game required the Panthers to come back from an 0-2 hole, which they were able to do for a 3-2 (22-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-23, 15-10) victory over Alderson Broaddus.

After dropping the first two sets, KWC was able to come out on top in a third frame that never had a lead of more than four points for either team until Danielle Brouillette closed out the set with a kill on an assist from Jackson. The fourth set wen much like the third, ending in favor of KWC to force the tiebreak.

The Panthers  took the early lead an used a short run to secure the five-set win. Jaylen McEwen led KWC with 17 kills, and Brouillette added 16. Nicole Venema led the defense with 21 digs, while Jackson dished out 34 assists.

Wesleyan returns home this weekend to host conference newcomer Tiffin University Friday, followed by Cedarville Saturday.

Panthers come up short in overtime loss
The Kentucky Wesleyan women’s soccer team took an overtime loss to Davis & Elkins. Tied at 1-1 through the first half, the Senators got the game-winner in the 107th minute.

The Panthers (1-2-1, 1-1-1 G-MAC) gave up an early goal by got the equalizer in the 37th minute when Erika Hinchliffe found Erica Zetter in traffic. It was Zetter’s first goal of the season. The Panthers took 12 shots in the first 45 minutes, with four shots on goal.

Brittany Johnston had two saves, while Shelby Stearsman had three.

The Panthers return home at 5 p.m. Thursday to host the University of Findlay.

KWC men fall to Senators on road
The Panthers (1-3, 0-2 G-MAC) suffered a 3-0 loss Saturday to Davis & Elkins College. The Senators took a 2-0 lead in the first 35 minutes and rode that to a conference victory. Wesleyan finished with six shots. Goalkeeper Jacob Stauffer played had eight saves.

The Panthers return home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to host the University of Findlay.

Cross Country opens season with fourth-place finishes
The Kentucky Wesleyan men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2018 season by each placing fourth Saturday at the Arthur J. Sciubba Invitational at Phil Moore Park in Bowling Green. Chase Bland, Sidney Reagor and Erin Wilson all placed in the Top 10.

Bland finished ninth, crossing in 16:42.53, while Hunter Kurz placed 20th, finishing in 17:05.66.  Patrick Quire (17:09.21) 23rd, and George Marsch (17:40.42) placed 35th.

On the women’s side, Sidney Reagor finished fifth with a time of 21:30.40 in her first collegiate race. Erin Wilson (21:49.82) finished ninth, Sydney Goff (22:11.25) was 11th place and Leslie Burns (22:55.88) placing 19th.

The Panthers return to action Sept. 22 when they head to Clarksville, Tenn., for the Austin Peay Invitational.
