District boys soccer; girls soccer, volleyball

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

Apollo and Owensboro Catholic boys’ soccer squared off in a district matchup. DCHS and OCHS girls’ soccer traveled to Evansville, while OHS played at home. The E-Gals, Lady Panthers, Lady Devils and Lady Raiders all had volleyball matches.

BOYS SOCCER
Apollo pulls away from Aces in second half
Apollo (6-6-1, 3-2 District 9) came away with a 5-2 victory over Owensboro Catholic (4-8, 0-5) to take control of second place in the district.

The Eagles got two goals from Jaelin Kirk and one each from Harrison Bowman, Wes Knott and John Zuberer. Bowman and Justin Gillim had one assist a piece, and Matt Marks had four saves in goal.

For the Aces, Caleb Ranallo and Cole Blandford each had a goal, while Blandford and Lance Dickens had one assist each. Boone McElroy had one save.

Apollo will now host Greenwood at 5 p.m. Saturday. Catholic travels to Clinton County to play Russellville in the 3rd/4th Region All “A” Sectional at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCER
Lady Aces fall on road to Memorial
Owensboro Catholic (7-2-1, 5-0 District 9) couldn’t get anything going in a 4-0 loss at Evansville Memorial. The Lady Aces gave up four goals, all in the first half. Megan Goodwin had 17 saves in goal. OCHS plays again at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Owensboro.

Lady Panthers tie in Evansville
Daviess County (4-4-2, 3-2 District 9) made the trip across the border, where they finished in a 1-1 tie with Evansville North. Kenlee Newcom scored the lone goal, and Gracie Kemplin had two saves. The Lady Panthers play again at 7 p.m. Monday against Ohio County.

Lady Devils fall at home
Owensboro (4-6, 1-4 District 9) lost at home 7-0 to Henderson County. Aubrie Schueler had 14 saves. The Lady Devils return to action at 6 p.m. Monday at McLean County.

VOLLEYBALL
Apollo beats Caldwell County
The E-Gals (16-4, 4-0 District 9) rolled to another win with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-8) sweep of Caldwell County at home.

Leading Apollo were Carlee Widmer (26 assists, 6 kills), Jenna McMillen (15 kills), Natalie Ewing (12 kills, 4 blocks), Taylor Blair (5 kills), Hallie Wilson (12 digs), Anslee Hopewell (9 digs) and Lindsey Hargitt (9 digs, 3 blocks).

The E-Gals are off until a 7 p.m. match at home Tuesday against Owensboro.

Daviess County wins in five sets
The Lady Panthers (12-6, 2-2 District 9) came away with a 3-2 (26-24, 28-26, 17-25, 14-25, 15-11) win over Meade County.

Leading the team were Jasmine Beasley (9 kills), Elizabeth Moore (6 kills), Ashton Johnson (6 kills), Kinsley Phelps (5 kills), Morgan Ralph (4 kills), Kendal Goetz (17 digs), Kayla Hagan (14 digs), Sydney Speed (9 digs), Ashton Johnson (9 digs) and Hannah Axley (14 assists).

DCHS next plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Owensboro Catholic.

Trinity picks up another road win
The Lady Raiders (15-3, 4-0 District 12) brought home a 3-1 (25-20, 25-10, 14-25, 25-20) victory over Hancock County.

Trinity was led by Savannah Aull (15 kills, 7 assists, 3 aces), Nina Wathen (16 assists, 8 kills) and Mary Hardesty (3 aces). The Lady Raiders return to action at 6 p.m. Monday against Union County.

Owensboro suffers home loss
The Lady Devils (4-18, 0-4 District 9) fell to Breckinridge County at home 2-0 (25-9, 25-16). No stats were available. Owensboro plays again at 7 p.m. Monday against Meade County.
