HS VB, boys soccer, girls golf; JV city county golf; KMS racing

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

All the local volleyball teams were in action, with Daviess County at Apollo, Owensboro at Owensboro Catholic and Trinity at McLean County. A pair of boys soccer teams (OHS and OCHS) picked up wins. The Lady Aces and Lady Devils played in a tri-match at Ben Hawes. The boys’ JV golf teams competed in their City County tournament. Results from Sunday’s race at Kentucky Motor Speedway are also included.

The Apollo girls golf team was scheduled to play in Madisonville, but they did not play in the match.

VOLLEYBALL
Apollo beats Daviess County 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-21)
Apollo (10-3, 3-0 District 9) earned a sweep over Daviess County (9-6, 1-2) at home for their fifth consecutive win — all in straight sets.

Leading the way for the E-Gals were Carlee Widmer (20 assists, 4 kills), Natalie Ewing (8 kills), Jenna McMillen (7 kills), Taylor Blair (6 kills) and Hallie Wilson (12 digs).

DCHS was led by Kinsley Phelps (6 blocks, 3 kills), Elizabeth Moore (3 kills, 3 blocks), Sarah Merritt (3 kills, 3 blocks), Ashton Johnson (3 kills), Sydney Speed (10 digs), Kendal Goetz (6 digs), Ryann Keller (7 assists), Delaney Evans (3 assists), Hannah Axley (2 assists) and Jasmine Beasley (2 kills).

Apollo is off until Friday, when they play in the Queens of the Court tournament at Central Hardin. The E-Gals play Taylor County at 7:30 p.m. and Nelson County at 8:30 p.m. Friday. They’ll then play three matches Saturday based on the first day’s results.

Daviess County hits the road for a 7:30 p.m. Thursday match at Muhlenberg County.

Trinity beats McLean County 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-18)
The Lady Raiders (10-2) won in three sets on the road at McLean County. Leading the way for Trinity were Savannah Aull (8 kills, 8 assists), Nina Wathen (5 kills, 7 assists), Mary Hardesty (3 aces) and Cassidy Morris (3 kills, 2 aces.)

Trinity will be on the road again at 5:30 p.m. Thursday for a match at Ohio County.

Owensboro Catholic beats Owensboro 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-10)

The Lady Aces (2-5, 2-1 Distict 9) swept the Lady Devils (3-14, 0-3) at home for a second consecutive victory. No stats were available for either team.

OCHS stays at home for a 7 p.m. Tuesday meeting with top district opponent Apollo. OHS will be on the road at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a match at McLean County.

BOYS SOCCER
Owensboro 2, Madisonville-North Hopkins 1
The Red Devils (5-2, 1-2 District 9) overcame a halftime deficit for a home victory over Madisonville-North Hopkins to win their fourth game in a row.

Paxton Jenkins scored a pair of goals, one assisted by Grayson McFarland, to secure the win. Bryson Wilkerson had four saves in goal. OHS had nine shots on goal, compared to five for their opposition.

Owensboro returns to action for an important rematch with Apollo (4-3, 2-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Eagles beat the Red Devils 1-0 three weeks ago.

Owensboro Catholic 2, Hopkins County Central 1
The Aces (3-5, 0-3 District 9) pressed all night but it wasn’t until the final minute that they were able to get the game-winning goal at Hopkins County Central. A score by Kevin Piedrahita with 30 seconds to play lifted OCHS to the victory.

Also scoring for the Aces was Lance Dickens, and Joe Fusco had both assists. Boone McElroy had one save in goal. OCHS outshot their opponent 23 (12 on goal) to 4 (2 on goal).

The Aces play again in a district match at 7 p.m. Thursday at Daviess County (9-0, 3-0).

GIRLS GOLF
OCHS, DCHS compete in home match with Henderson County
Owensboro Catholic (180) beat out Daviess County (192) and Henderson County (198) in a three-team match at Ben Hawes.

The Lady Aces’ Emma Payne was the medalist on the day with a 35, beating teammate Abby Bannock (41) for the top spot. Also scoring for OCHS were Maddi Roberts (45) and RC Porter (59).

The Lady Panthers were led by third-place individualist Holly Holten (41), followed by Grace Heady (47), Emilee Clark (51) and Addison Heady (53).

BOYS GOLF
Panthers’ golfers take top spots in JV city county
Golfers from Apollo, Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic competed in the JV City County match, and the Panthers swept the podium.

Kegan Hall’s 43 was good for the medalist title, while Dawson Lamb (45) and Luke Eckstein (46) tooke the other top spots. Other competitors from Daviess County were Jayden Lanham (46), Gabe Vincent (46), Hunter Smith (56) and Hayden Sapp (60).

The top finisher from Owensboro Catholic was Jacob Warren (47), followed by Sam Mitchell (50), Will Fulkerson (50), Ben Murphy (63), Cooper Danzer (68), Ashton McCarty (68) and Eli Thompson (69).

Apollo’s low scorer was Aiden Watson (52), followed by Ashton Hope (62) and Jamie Head (64).
