KWC, Brescia meet twice in busy weekend schedule

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

In the midst of a busy weekend for both schools, Brescia and Kentucky Wesleyan squared off in  men’s soccer as well as women’s volleyball. Read below for all the events of Saturday and Sunday.

MEN’S SOCCER
Bresica men’s soccer loses at home to KWC
In the first match of the home season, the Bearcats lost to crosstown opponent Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday. The Panthers got on the board in the first half with a goal by Victor Alhambra, and the score held through halftime.

Ausitn Moore got his first of two goals with an assist by Julian Gonzalez and added another unassisted score in the final 5 minutes. Jacob Stauffer and Lucas Daunhauer combined for the shutout in the KWC goal.

The Bearcts play again Wednesday at Kamuf Park against Georgetwon College. KWC goes on the road to Pillipi, W.V., for a conference match against Alderson Broaddus.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
KWC women finish in tie
The Panthers finised in a scoreless tie against Findlay in the first conference game of the season Sunday. Goalkeeper Brittany Johnson posted her first shuotout with 12 saves. KWC stays on the road for a pair of G-MAC matches at Alderson Boraddus Thursday and Davis & Elkins Saturday.

Brescia women’s suffers first loss of season
Spalding 4, Brescia 1
The Lady Bearcats fell in an early 0-2 hole after allowing a pair of goals in the first 7 minutes Saturday. Near the midpoint of the half, Brescia’s Alison Chappell cut the lead to 2-1 with her second goal of the year. An aggressive attack by the Bearcats to start the second half was stopped by a stiff Spalding defense, and the Golden Eagles were able to add two more goals for good measure late in the game.

Brescia plays again today at Berea College.

VOLLEYBALL
Brescia vs. KWC match highlights tournament
KWC beats Brescia 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 26-24, 25-19)
The Panthers won the final game of the night to remain perfect in the tournament. Against Brescia, Lydia Jackson had 40 assists and 16 digs, Danielle Brouillette added 12 kills and Nilah Roy added 10 kills and 11 digs. Nicole Venema finished with 19 digs and three aces.

The Panthers play again today against Lake Erie. Brescia has a tought match Wednesday against defending national champions Lindsey Wilson.

Brescia beats Maryville University-St. Louis 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19)
The Lady Bearcats got their third win of the tournament against Maryville. They were led in kills by freshman Melissa Bell (21), while Brittney Just recorded 39 assissts. Kristin Logsdon recorded 37 digs, followed by Natalie Jones (21), Karis Hortin (10) and Kailee Moore (10).

KWC 3, Bluefield State 0 (25-5, 25-12, 25-5)
The Panthers cruised to a win in the first match of the day before edging the Bearcats to remain undefeated in their own tournament. Daneille Brouillette led with five kills and six aces, Kori Weaver added seven aces and four digs, and Alex Montoya had 16 assists.
