Three early touchdowns for Owensboro turned into a 42-20 rout of district opponent Christian County on the road Friday.

The Red Devils (4-2, 1-0 District 1) came out of a bye week to pick up their first district win, and head coach Jay Fallin said the team felt good going into the game.

“With any opponent, you have to have a good week of preparation,” he said. “We felt that we had a good game plan. We felt if we executed, we could score points and limit what they were doing offensively. We made the plays tonight that we needed to.”

A big factor Owensboro was Tre Green, who finished with four total touchdowns. He was efficient in his touches, with six carries for 49 yards and two scores to go along with four receptions for 32 yards and another pair of touchdowns.

“Offensive play calling is about taking what the defense is giving you,” Fallin said. “Tonight was Tre’s night. We went to him several times and he made the plays we needed him to make.”

It was Austin Gough that struck first for Owensboro with a 4-yard run on the opening drive. Green got his first receiving touchdown on a 19-yard pass by Will Warren after Aireon Phillips got an interception. Warren connected with Green again for 9 yards for a 21-0 lead.

Christian County scored early in the second quarter, but the extra point was blocked by Monte Owsley.

The only touchdown of the third quarter came off a 17-yard run by Green. Christian County cut back into the lead by scoring on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line, but Green finished off his night with a 10-yard rushing touchdown at the other end of the field.

The Red Devils recovered their own squib kick and got a 9-yard score from Owsley, and Christian County got one more late touchdown on a 32-yard run.

It was another high-scoring night for the OHS offense, but Fallin said he’s happy the defense is continuing to get better. It’s the third consecutive week they’ve allowed three touchdowns or less.

“As long as we’re improving, that’s what’s important,” Fallin said. “The defensive side of the ball has improved by leaps and bounds over the last three games.”

The Red Devils stay on the road for a 7 p.m. Friday game at Marshall County.
