VB, golf teams compete in All ‘A’; soccer teams in action

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

Owensboro Catholic volleyball was able to take down Trinity in the championship match of the 3rd Region All “A” Classic. Apollo volleyball advanced to the championship game of their tournament at Central Hardin.

The Owensboro Catholic boys’ and girls’ golf teams competed in the All “A” State Tournament.

The Apollo, Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic boys’ soccer teams all played on the road. Apollo’s girls also competed away from home, while matches for Daviess County, Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic girls were all cancelled due to weather.

VOLLEYBALL
Lady Aces defeat Lady Raiders in 3rd Region All ‘A’ Classic
Owensboro Catholic (5-5) and Trinity (13-3) advanced to square off in the championship match of the 3rd Region All “A” Classic, where the Lady Aces won in a best two-of-three series. OCHS won 2-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-12).

Both teams swept their first two matches of the day, with the Lady Aces beating Hancock County 2-0 (25-15, 25-16) and McLean County 2-0 (25-14, 25-9). The Lady Raiders beat Edmonson County 2-0 (25-15, 25-15) and Cloverport 2-0 (25-11, 25-9).

No stats were available for OCHS. Leading the Lady Raiders on the day were Savannah Aull (19 kills, 17 assists), Nina Wathen (15 kills, 21 assists, 11 aces) and Morgan Kinsey (8 kills).

Apollo falls in championship match of tournament
The E-Gals (14-4) took second place after rolling to the title match of the Queens of the Court at Central Hardin. After sweeping their matches Friday night, Apollo started the day by beating Lakota West (West Chester, Ohio) 2-1 (26-24, 19-25, 15-11).

They then swept Sparkman (Harvest, Ala.) 2-0 (25-16, 25-16) to advance to the championship match, where they fell to Central Hardin 2-1 (23-25, 25-15, 15-10).

Leading the team for the day were Carlee Widmer (47 assists), Natalie Ewing (23 kills), Jenna McMillen (18 kills), Taylor Blair (10 kills) and Hallie Wilson (26 digs).

GOLF
Aces, Lady Aces compete in All ‘A’ Tournament
Both Owensboro Catholic teams played at the Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond. The Lady Aces (362) took third overall, and they were led by third-place individualist Emma Payne (74).

Also scoring for OCHS were Maddi Roberts (87), Abby Bahnick (85) and RC Porter (116).

The boys’ team got scoring from Jakob Wellman (87), Griffin Payne (87), JT Payne (89) and Noah Johnson (98).

BOYS SOCCER
Apollo splits first two games at Boots and Butts Soccer Classic at Hopkinsville
The Eagles’ first game of the day came down to penalty kicks, but they were able to pull out the 4-3 win over West Jessamine. The regulation ended in 3-3 tie before going to overtime.

Apollo got a pair of goals from Harrison Bowman and another from Sui Thang. Lucas Rigling had two assists, and Wah Htoo added one of his own. John Zuberer had five saves in goal.

The Eagles (5-5) weren’t able to hold on to a halftime lead in game two, falling 4-3 to Hopkinsville. Bowman added a goal for his third score of the day, and Wes Knott added two goals. Elbert Moo and Thang each had an assist.

Owensboro routs Glasgow for another win
The Red Devils (7-2) picked up their sixth win in a row with a 10-0 victory behind four goals from Zane West. Tee Wah added two goals, while Grayson McFarland, Kevin Payne, Bryson Wilkerson and Hser Thaw had one score each. McFarland added four assists, and Wah and Reis Dickenson both had one.

Radley Worth had three saves in goal. Owensboro finished with 48 total shots despite being without injured starters Ausitn Sovar, Fermin Mosqueda, Paxton Jenkins and Josh Head.

Aces fall short in road match
The Aces (3-6) came up short in a 3-2 loss to Fort Cambell. Kevin Piedrahita and Davis Conner each had a goal, and Max Kurtz had the only assist. Boone McElroy had three saves in goal.

GIRLS SOCCER
E-Gals get shutout in road match
The E-Gals (4-5) rolled to an 8-0 victory over Grayson County behind a hat trick from Shelby Taylor. Caitlyn Blandford added two goals, while Kayla Wills, Bailey Thomas and Shelby Boone each added a single score. Alyssa Lawrence had three assists, and Taylor had two. Blandford and Brianna Troutman each added one assist.

Zoe Floyd got the shutout with one save in goal.
